Eight Smartphones for Motor Enthusiasts: When Luxury Cars and Unite in a Mobile

The term “luxury” can be applied to many sectors, but this time we are going to keep two of them: mobile telephony and car brands. What happens when both worlds are combined? Creations arise as the terminals that we review in this selection.

No, we are not talking about, for example, the models of the Tonino Lamborghini Mobile range, but special editions that smartphone manufacturers launch in collaboration with some brand of engine (usually luxury). The first ones that come to mind come from the hand of Huawei and, more recently, OPPO, but there are many more models that existed at the time and some that, hopefully, we can see very soon.

Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS

During the presentation of the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, the CEO of Porsche took the stage to announce a new device of its ‘Porsche Design’ series (which has other models to its credit, such as the Huawei Mate 10 Porsche): the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS.

It is a version of the Huawei P20 Pro that shares most features (including the triple camera, Kirin 970 processor and 6GB of RAM), but introduces some improved features and boasts a more refined look.

Some of those differences are that the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS presents a design curved by the eight sides and inspired by the Porsche RS, without notch and with double fingerprint reader: one in the back and another integrated in the OLED 2K screen. In addition, it is available with up to 512 GB of storage.

Its launch price was 1,695 euros for the version with 256GB and 2,095 euros for the 512GB version, although you can currently find it from 1,550 euros in the online store of Porsche Design. It is for sale in black, but in China a limited version in red was marketed.

OPPO Find X Lamborghini Edition

Coinciding with the presentation of its new flagship, OPPO Find X, OPPO also announced a special edition in collaboration with Lamborghini (which, as we have said, has its own mobile division with proposals such as Alpha One).

The OPPO Find X Lamborghini Edition is a premium version of the Find X that uses carbon fiber as its main material, a tough and light element, used, for example, in Formula 1 cars. It also includes the emblem of the house Italian in the back of the terminal and has 512 GB of internal storage. For the rest, it’s exactly the same as his brother, the OPPO Find X.

At the moment, only some lucky ones have been able to acquire it in a flash sale that went out in China a few weeks ago (it ran out after a few seconds). In the rest of the world, there is no official launch date, but we know that it will reach the market with a price of 1,699 euros.

Asus ZX1 Lamborghini

Now let’s start with that list of models that were some day in the market, but has already been discontinued. We started with the partnership between ASUS and Lamborghini, which gave rise ten years ago to the appearance of an innovative, elegant and sporty phone (for the time, of course).

The ASUS Lamborghini ZX1 had a beehive design on top that simulated the air intake of the grill of a vehicle of the Italian house. It also had a nine-address pad to navigate the menus and a custom user interface for motor enthusiasts.

In the technical section, it had a 2.8-inch touch screen (240 x 320 pixels), a Qualcomm 520 MHz CPU and a 3 MP camera, in addition to 3G connectivity, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. It had no Android operating system, but its particular interface, named ASUS Glide, worked on the basis of Windows Mobile 6.1.

Acer Liquid E Ferrari Special Edition

Another phone that has reached a decade is the Liquid E Ferrari Special Edition of Acer, a terminal based on the Acer Liquid E, but with the emblem and the characteristic red color of the Scuderia.

Otherwise, it came with Android 2.1 Éclair operating system, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 768 MHz processor, 3.5-inch screen (800 × 480 pixels), WiFi connectivity, A-GPS, 256MB of RAM, 512MB of storage and a camera 5 megapixels.

It also included several personalized contents (wallpapers, images, videos, ringtones, web links …) and was marketed in a personalized case with the Ferrari brand along with a Jawbone Prime Bluetooth headset.

This collaboration between Acer and Ferrari would also arise one year later, in 2011, the Acer Liquid Mini Edition Ferrari.

BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9983

Throughout the years that the collaboration between the automobile company and the mobile one lasted, several elitist terminals emerged, both in price and in design. BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9983 is his latest creation (we talked about the year 2015) and, like his predecessors, P’9981 and P’9982, consists of a BlackBerry “dressed in full dress”.

In the design section, this model is characterized by using a special technology of glass fabric and keys similar to glass but with the durability of rigid synthetic materials, in addition to a special 3D effect with characters in silver typography.

In addition, this smartphone (with BlackBerry 10 OS operating system instead of Android) comes with an exclusive PIN code to access the Porsche Design club and personalized content (home screen, clock, ringtone and automatic signature, among others).

There is also a version with the leather back, BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9983 Graphite. Both models went on sale at the time for $ 1,950 (about 1,685 euros to change).
